Cinematography
Cinematography is seen as a conventional and important element which is used in music video's in order to show the audience a person or an object in a different light. Cinematography allows the audience to view the artist in a different perspective which helps contributes towards their interpretations of the artist and whether or not the artist visually appeals to them.
The cinematography i plan to use in my music video consist of the following:
Close up shots will be used when the artist is filmed in a white room singing. I have chosen to use this because it allows the audience to see a close up shot of the artist which will enable them to capture the emotions from the artist fast. This is conventional to a house genre as close up's allow the audience to relate to the artist depending on their response which ultimately boostes an artist's star image.
Panning Shots will be used in my music video to show the background design of graffiti on the walls, in the area where the artist and dancers are all set to perform. I have chosen to use this because panning shots create more of a dramatic effect amongst the audience than what a ordinary straight shot would. This will then influence how the audience interpret the artist, characters and also the sourroundings.
Long Shots will be used in my music video during the frames where the artist is seen standing/walking around a white room singing. I have chosen to use this as it will allow the audience to see a full contrast of the artist's body. This is effective as it will allow the artist's visual elements such as costume to visually appeal to the audience due to them taking a liking to the artist's dress sense. This promotes the artist's star image and identity recognition.
Zoom Shots will be used on the artist and characters at different points during the music video. I have chosen to use this because it allows the audience to see the emotions of the persons face which can decide how the audience feel about what they just found, E.g. Sympathy, Empathy. This is conventional to a house genre as it uses the artist and characters facial expressions to create sympathetic response amongst the audience.
Medium Shots will be used when the artist is seen in a white painted room singing. I have chosen to do this as it allows the audience to see the artist from waist up which allows the audience to see them in a different perspective. This is conventional to the house genre as it allows the audience to capture their body language and facial expressions which tell a lot about a persons attitude.
Low angle shots will be used of the artist in order show his significances and laid back attitude. I have chosen to do this as it portrays the artist in a different perspective thus promoting his star image. This is conventional to the house genre as stars representations are formed due to the way they are portrayed through the use of different cinematography shots and techniques.
Editing
Editing is the most important element in the whole production process of a music video. I believe it is important to this about editing especially in music videos because they it places together different scenes in order to create a effective response amongst the audience. This can be done through adjusting the pace of the song as there are different editing techniques such as montage shot which makes the scenes seem faster whilst fueling the audiences engagement.
The editing I plan to use in my music video consists of the following:
Montage shots will be used during the narrative of the street dance battle. I have chosen to use this because it allows me form a sequence of different shots gathered and merge the most important/effective shots together. This is conventional to a house genre as it grabs the audiences attention and creates a sense of excitement amongst them which fuels their engagement.
Fade to back edits will be usd at the start of the music video where it has a montage shot of the different locations which will be used during this music video. I have chosen to use this because I feel that the black filter in between the two shots create a great merging effect.
Fast pace editing will be used during the frames of the street dance battle between the two rival groups. I have chosen to use this as it will create a dazzling effect amongst the audience whilst watching the dance battle. In addition, this would compliment the dance battle scenes well as it would create a sense of excitement. This is conventional to the house genre as it will leave the audience visually entice due to them not knowing what will happen next.
Jump cut will be used during the filming of the dance groups competing against one another. I have chosen to use this as it adds a normality effect amongst the audience allowing them to relate. In addition, this is a editing technique which to some extent is conventional to the house genre.
Conclusion
Planning the cinematography and editing I aim to implement in my music video was very effective as it allowed me to break down all the different elements and decide which one would be most effective in my music video and why. This also keeps me organised as when it comes to the day of filming, I won't be running around trying different camera techniques.
Some good ideas here on the cinematography and editing you plan to use within your music video which is further great evidence of careful planning. You discuss your choices well in what you hope to gain from the audience and how the examples relate to your genre.
ReplyDelete-can you also relate some of these choices to theory? Dyer and Goodwin? Either do this when you introduce the micro-elements or when you relate your examples back.
