Research: Music Video Channels by Jemar Legister

Music channels why are they important?

Music channels are seen as very important in the music industry as they allow an artist to promote themselves due to the exposure which the music channel gives them. Different music channels have a different genres of music in which they play. This benefits the audience as they can choose a specific music channel in order to suit their taste. In addition, Artist benefit from this as they can now attract more of an interest in different viewers who haven’t seen or heard of them before.

Music Genres

Music channels sometimes also have sub-channels also known as sister channels. For example,  MTV Base, Rock and dance. This gives viewers more of a variety of music to choose from in order to suit their taste.

Music industry

The music industry has evolved significantly over recent years due to the innovation made in technology. This is seen through how music videos are put together and produce in comparisons to how they were done a few years. There are also a lot more music channels than ever before due to the increase in the popularity of music.
This increase in music channels in today’s television has been made to suit the taste of a majority of people who are into genre’s as this will allow the music industry to appeal to more/different people all at once. In addition, without music channels artist will have less exposure and less viewers which will lead to a decrease in demand and potentially sales for the artists record label.

Music channels and synergy to appeal to the audience:

Music channels are able to appeal to their target audience due to them producing what the audience want to hear which keeps them coming back. This is because music is based on the audience as without an audience there wouldn’t be any music produced which is why music channels aim to meet their audiences need.
Some music and film’s merge together through the soundtrack they use, this is what you call synergy. It is seen as very beneficial to both the music and film industry in terms of promotion and increasing sales as when one industry is promoting, it then promotes the other. For example, Wiz Khalifa’s  song called We own it was used as the soundtrack to fast and furious 6.

·         Underrepresentation of music channels?
Underrepresented music genres are seen as the music genre’s which aren’t seen as mainstream and aren’t as popular amongst the people of today. These underrepresented genres are mostly niche genres such as classical or country which have a low UK fan base. American channels also have a low UK fan base due to them having a different lifestyle to ours which is why there music channels aren’t as popular.

Advantages: of having so many channels.
-          Exposure
-          Promote artist
-          Synergy
-          Increase probability of download from viewers
-          Visually stimulate
Conclusion:

From my research on music channels I think I would prefer to play my music video on one of the pop genres such as MTV. This is because I’ve realised I would receive a significant amount of exposure playing my music video on a mainstream channel. However, I may also choose to play it on a music channel which plays niche genres depending on the genre of my music video as I will be able to specifically target audience’s needs.

  1. Music channels are well discussed here. You provide some good information on MTV and how they have sister channels. The importnace of music channels are also discussed to some detail.

    To improve;
-what do sister channels offer audiences and institutions? Think about the benefits MTV has showing so many different genres of music
-having a variety of shows now on, how can this further appeal to audiences?
-list some of the music channels that are now available to watch
